De Amerikaan Michael Norman, amper 21 jaar oud, heeft zaterdag indruk gemaakt op de 400 meter tijdens de Mt. Sac Relays in het Amerikaanse Torrance. Hij opende het seizoen met een chrono van 43.45, goed voor de zesde chrono aller tijden op die afstand (samen met Jeremy Wariner). Enkel Wayde van Niekerk, Michael Johnson en Butch Reynolds liepen ooit sneller. In een andere reeks zette Dylan Borlée 46.45 op de tabellen. Zijn broer Kevin verscheen niet aan de start.

Voormalig olympisch en wereldkampioen op de 1.500m Asbel Kiprop heeft van de Disciplinaire Commissie van de Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) een schorsing van vier jaar gekregen voor dopinggebruik, zo maakte de AIU zaterdag bekend. De schorsing is ingegaan op 3 februari 2018 en dus staat de 29-jarige Keniaan nog tot begin 2022 aan de kant.

Degefa dominates, Cherono outsprints Desisa in Boston

Worknesh Degefa and Lawrence Cherono won the 2019 Boston Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label road race, on Monday (15th) with utterly different race strategies. Degefa, running her first Boston, pulled away from the pack after the 5km mark and ran alone for two hours to the finish, winning in 2:23:31. Cherono ran defensively and only seized the lead from two-time Boston champion Lelisa Desisa in the last strides of the race, his clocking of 2:07:57 to Desisa’s 2:07:59 not really capturing how close their finish actually was.
